Maharashtra Program for sustainable rural sanitation
please watch video below for full overview over program.
Step 1: Ask in a village that we are already in contact with, which other 10 villages they know about that are not completely equipped with toilets. In the current case, the responsibles in Darewadi and Rawdawadi can be asked about 10 more villages. Then, mark the villages on a map with them together. Also ask for a contact person in the village and their contact phone number.
Village Visit #1
Step 2: If you got a contact person for the next village you are going to approach, make an appointment in advance by phone. If you don't have a contact person in the village, approach the village cold.
Step 3: Once you arrive in the village, see to have a small reunion with the head / administrative responsible / spokesperson of the village. Ask whether there could be 5 to 10 people present that have already expressed interest in having a toilet or that could be interested in having a toilet (not people that already have toilets).
When everyone is present, there should be a short introduction of you, our organization, our purpose, what we have done in Darewadi and the benefit of the toilets we provide. Also bring flyers and information material in Marathi, Hindi and English. There will be a script for this introduction with the most important information to convey.
Step 4:After the introduction, survey the people present in the reunion. Pitch again the benefits of the toilet, explain that every household will only incure costs have to contribute 5000 INR from their own pocket to having a toilet. Sign up people that are interested in having a toilet (pre-commit them), get their contact details and tell them, that you will come again to do a training session with them, before the construction of the toilet. Agree on a follow up date (if that is possible).
Then, ask to be allowed to do a survey with 10 to 20 additional families and to explain the benefits of the toilet to individual households. If you are two people doing the survey, you can also split up and individually survey and pitch families. This will save you time. A survey shouldn't last longer than 10 to 15 minutes. There will be a survey script for this work with the most important information to convey.
Step 5: Survey and Pitch
While doing the survey and explaining what we are doing, pay special attention to people that seem interested in having an ecological toilet. Do they want a toilet? Have they heard about other people using ecological toilets and benefiting from increased yields and better health? Put these people on a seperate list and coordinate with them a day for the intentsive hygiene training (have them block between two to three hours for the training session). When families pre-commit to having a toilet, they need to understand, that they can only get a toilet if the themselves contribute 5000 INR to their own toilet.
Step 6: When back in Pune, update all the survey data in the Google Drive database, along with the contact data of the families interested in having a toilet.
Village Visit #2:
Step 7: Remind families interested in having toilets about the hygiene training date. Then go to village and conduct the hygiene and awareness training. Please follow the hygiene awareness training script.
